'Mission Critical' Push For Disability Representation In Defence

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has committed itself to building a more inclusive Armed Forces as part of the Government’s newly-announced National Disability Strategy.

Options being looked at include a recruitment plan for more diversity as well as prioritising the new National Cyber Force as a pathfinder for inclusion.

These changes are aimed at creating more opportunities in both the Armed Forces and in civilian roles, providing more freedom for the minority group to serve.

Ministerial Disability Champion for the MOD, Leo Docherty, said the changes would maximise the "capability" of the workforce.

"It is mission-critical that we maximise the diversity and capability of the workforce throughout the defence sector.

"The National Disability Strategy is an important contribution to this goal, levelling up opportunities for people with disabilities to fully participate in the life of this country, including its defence.

"This is why there is a focus on increasing the number of opportunities for those who have been classed as disabled to join defence.

"It is also why we will continue to ensure that more people who become disabled through the course of their service can continue to serve.

"And for those who cannot, we will ensure they receive the best support as veterans, recognising and nurturing their talents and ongoing contribution to our national life."

The strategy, which sets out 100 immediate commitments across government, is supported by £1.6bn of funding alongside an ambitious plan for future reform.

Progress will be backed by each department's Ministerial Disability Champion and will be reported on every 12 months.

It marks the first cross-Government endeavour to improve disabled people's everyday lives with legislation, policy and funding and would see changes in all areas, including access to justice, culture and the arts.
