Sinkhole Uncovers Wartime Secrets Under... Primark

A sinkhole under the carpark of a Kent branch of Primark recently opened to reveal a hidden network of tunnels dating back as far as 100 years.

History experts have suggested that the subterranean network might have been used in both world wars.

The tunnels, discovered underneath the Broadstairs retail complex, contain a number of items such as rusted metal barrels and basins.

They were discovered after a similar incidence at Westwood Cross, and were explored by local group Thanet Hidden History.

The group believes that the British Army used the tunnels for training exercises, but have not yet concluded as to whether they were created before the First World War, or afterwards.

A freedom of information request has been sent to the MoD in order to determine the origin of the tunnels.

However, they replied that ‘no information’ could be found in their records in regards to the tunnels.

The Primark on the site of the discovery reopened last weekend after being closed since May since the subsidence.
