MoD To Be Scrutinised Over Judicial Support To Personnel

The Ministry of Defence is to be scrutinised over the support it offers service personnel involved in the judicial process.
The Defence Sub-Committee is asking serving and former personnel and their families to let them know what support they currently receive, and whether they need more.
It comes after it launched an inquiry into military exercises and the duty of care late last year.
The committee also wants to know:
•What additional support should be provided by the MoD.
•Whether the MoD’s framework of support is fit for purpose.
•The advice given by the MoD on how to access independent legal advice.
•The impact of the judicial process on the right to a personal life and;
•The package of support provide by MoD and how it compares to support offered by other countries to their militaries.
An MoD spokesperson said:
"Our duty of care to service personnel who face legal proceedings as a result of actions taken in connection with their military service is of the utmost importance.
"The department is committed to standing behind its people who act reasonably and in good faith in the course of their duties. This applies equally to serving and former personnel.
"The MoD will provide or fund legal representation for service personnel in a variety of legal contexts; including those who are the subject of criminal investigations as well as those giving evidence about their own conduct in other forums such as inquests or public inquiries.
"In addition a range of welfare support is available from a variety of sources.
"This will be provided primarily through the chain of command for those still serving, whilst retired personnel can access a network of support from Veterans UK, regimental associations, service charities and other sources."
The committee cannot consider matters currently before a court of law, and cannot act as a court of appeal.
The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, June 8. More information is available on the Defence Sub-Committee website.
