Work Begins To Repair WW2 Memorials

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has almost completed a project to re-install eighty-five headstones at Sighthill cemetery in Glasgow.

The stones are being replaced after the cemetery fell into disrepair in the 1950's.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission have spent the last five years working with Glasgow Council to track down the plots of the war dead buried here and make sure that troops are remembered.

Sighthill cemetery fell into disrepair in the 1950's and many of the headstones were removed, with the war dead instead remembered on a memorial in England for six decades.

But now the Commonwealth War Graves Commission have almost completed their project to replace eighty-five headstones so that families can remember their relatives where they lay.

Also being remembered is Andrew Smith Brownlee. A Sergeant in the RAF's 108 Squadron, he was travelling back from operations in Second World War Egypt when his plane crashed over Ireland.

His relatives are now scattered across the UK and finding out about his story has brought them together.

In the next two weeks, the final headstones will be replaced as the Commonwealth War Graves Commission continues to work on creating fitting memorials in 23 thousand locations worldwide.
