TV Star Johnny Ball Campaigns For Blind Veterans
TV star Johnny Ball is leading a campaign to increase awareness of the support available for service personnel suffering from sight loss.
As part of Remembrance, Blind Veterans UK is reaching out to veterans of National Service.
The charity is offering financial support to anyone who did their duty, and who may now be suffering from severe sight loss.
The 70s and 80s celebrity joined Richard Hatch and Verity Geere for their Forces Radio BFBS Breakfast Show. Listen to the full interview below:
The RAF veteran has been encouraging more people to get in touch with Blind Veterans UK.
A study commissioned by the charity reveals more than half of the general public including the veterans themselves, do not consider those conscripted for National Service to be veterans.
This number includes the veterans themselves, and that means they are missing out on vital support.
Johnny remembers his three years of National Service fondly. During that time, he was a radar operator who was trained to identify enemy aircraft:
At this time of Remembrance, it’s hoped blind veterans who have ever served their country will accept the support they deserve.
In 2014, Johnny Ball also opened a newly-refurbished centre for visually impaired veterans.
