Letters Detailing Remarkable Second World War Love Story Up For Sale

Remarkable Second World War love letters between a Canadian pilot detained in Germany and a member of the Women's Auxiliary Air Force are set to go up for auction.

Canadian airman Sergeant Harry 'Olie' Olsen and Dot 'Gipsy' Preston met in 1941 and, although the pair were separated by the war, their correspondence continued.

In 1942, Olie was shot down over Germany and after surviving the crash, spent the rest of the war in a prisoner of war camp near Essen.

However, their love affair continued, with Olie sending post from the camp to Ms Preston's wartime home in Eckington, Sheffield.

The letters, including one with lines blacked out by German sensors, and other Second World War RAF war memorabilia are now expected to sell for between £400-£600 at Hansons Auctioneers' Medals, Militaria and Firearms sale on October 1.
