The 36th (Ulster) Division And The Somme

As the centenary of the Battle of the Somme approaches, the military community is reflecting on an infamous event in history.

It lasted 141 days, and caused 60,000 British casualties in the first 24 hours.

On July 1st, there will be a commemoration for the five and a half thousand Irishmen who were declared killed, wounded or missing on the first day of the battle.

As Fiona Weir reports, there was hardly a town or village in Ireland that wasn't affected by the carnage.
