The Royal Navy's basic training facility at HMS Raleigh is opening its gates to visiting veterans so they can see what modern-day training in the service is like.

From spring term 2025, veterans will get a chance to take a trip down memory lane by going back on site for a mix of nostalgia and a glimpse into the future of the Navy.

The idea was trialled in the autumn of 2023 and allowed old shipmates to reminisce, see how training has, or hasn't, evolved and watch recruits pass out.

The senior staff at Torpoint want to continue the idea, but also show them how training has changed to meet the expectations of both the men and women joining the service, but also the modern demands of the fleet.   Visiting veterans will be able to watch successful recruits receive their epaulettes, tour a messdeck and watch a film showing how the Royal Navy of 2025 turns civilians into sailors.

Watch: Royal Navy recruits get first taste of life on the water at Jupiter Point

However, they won't have the chance to visit old blocks or messes and will be unable to visit some of the more distant training facilities like Jupiter Point, the fire school or Pier Cellars.

After lunch, the visiting veterans can move to the parade ground for a passing out parade.

Throughout the day, members of local Royal Naval Associations will assist and support those visiting the Naval college.

Visiting is open to anyone, whether they served on the staff or Raleigh or only attended basic training and never returned.

Space is limited to 15 people per visit, plus one friend or carer, with allocation made on first come, first served basis.

The Royal Navy says those who are interested in visiting should contact [email protected] to find out more.
