A US Lieutenant Commander has been tasked with "maintaining and increasing morale" on board Britain's biggest warship.

A strange order for a senior rank, only this Lt Cdr is a US Navy therapy dog.

Lt Cdr Ike, a yellow labrador, joined the crew complete with a US Navy letter stating his order, which was shared on X, formerly Twitter, by the UK Military and Defence Staff in the US.

While the letter showed Lt Cdr Ike's orders for his work on American vessel USS Wasp, it gave an insight into his duties supporting personnel on HMS Prince of Wales.

As well as being "present for daily operations" and offering "trained support and comfort" to all personnel on board, Lt Cdr Ike is also tasked with providing "therapy and stress relief" with the "utmost commitment".

It was also requested the US Navy's four legged friend was "approved with all care, medical and otherwise… to sustain his livelihood".

Lt Cdr Ike works for the US charity Mutts with a Mission, an organisation providing therapy dogs for former service personnel.

He previously visited HMS Prince of Wales and was pictured wearing some special dog goggles as he made his way across the carrier's flight deck.

The charity also previously visited the carrier in October, before the Queen Elizabeth-class carrier set sail from Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia.

Watch: HMS Prince of Wales crew welcome American service dogs on board for canine cuddles.
