Defence School of Photography Celebrates Landmarks

The Defence School of Photography has been celebrating two landmark dates - its centenary and also 50 years since it moved to RAF Cosford in Shropshire.

The school, which trains all three services in all forms of photography, opened its doors to 300 ex service personnel last week for an exhibition celebrating its history.

Among the highlights was a ‘centenary’ room holding equipment, photos and stories from the birth of defence photography through to the modern-day, including some very special items used by the likes of ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ and a captain in the original Great Escape.

Defence photography was born out of the requirement for aerial reconnaissance during World War One, with commemorations to mark the centenary of the conflict continuing this year.

The school, meanwhile, is holding an exhibition at Shrewsbury Museum from mid-October which will be open to the public.
