The Millies: Who Will YOU Nominate?

The Sun Military Awards, aka the Millies, have become a fixture in the forces calendar and a welcome opportunity to celebrate the everyday heroism of our armed forces.

This year’s nominations are now open and we want to hear from you.

The Millies as they have become known started in 2008, glitzy showbiz occasions, they provide a platform for the unsung heroes of the Armed forces community.

The awards will be held in January and Forces TV will be showing full coverage of the event.

Like previous years it should be a glamorous event with high profile names and celebrities giving their support to the service community.

This year’s judging panel include Lorraine Kelly, Lord West, Andy McNabb and Ben McBean, but in seven of the nine categories the public choose the winners and you can nominate a friend or comrade for the following:

  • Most Outstanding Soldier
  • Most Outstanding Sailor or Marine
  • Most Outstanding Airman
  • Best Unit
  • Best Reservist
  • Overcoming Adversity
  • Support to the Armed Forces

The nomination period runs until 20th November 2015 - and it’s been a busy year.

In February Britain sent around 800 military personnel to help battle the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone, working in special protective suits in temperatures reaching over 30 degrees.

During the British deployment the infection rate fell from 500 a week to below 50.

In the summer HMS Bulwark played a key role in rescuing over 1,000 refugees in the Mediterranean trying to escape Libya and reach safety in Italy.

Royal Marine Commandos scrambled to help pregnant women and young children climb aboard the Royal Navy ship.

There are also the RAF crews working out of Cyprus involved in Op Shader, the code name given to British involvement in combatting Islamic State in Iraq.

And despite a major reduction in troop numbers in Afghanistan, servicemen and women are still working hard out there in hostile conditions to train the new Afghan Army.

Nominations close on 20th November so don’t miss that date.
