RAF burnt by the heat as they fall to UK Fire Service defeat in Wolverhampton

It was defeat for the RAF against the Fire Service

The RAF women's football team have been beaten by a 2-1 score at Wolves' Compton Park Training Ground against the UK Fire Service.

An untidy first half saw the Fire Service race into a 2-0 lead and could have scored a few more as the RAF struggled to get into the tempo of the game.

The second half, with a few tactical tweaks, led to an Air Force improvement but Lucy Farrow's goal wasn't enough to stop the defeat.

The Air Force were without two key stars, captain Cat Beaver and dependable central defender Shaunna Jenkins, and that defensive loss meant they were unable to contain the Fire Service's attack.

Their first goal was a mistake from goalkeeper Jamie Lee-Bamford as she didn't keep hold of the ball, and a sliding finish put the team in white 1-0 up.

Moments later, Bamford raced out to deal with a counter-attack but was stuck in a vulnerable position as the Fire Service striker lobbed the ball over her head, and the rushing defender, Ashleigh Housley-Stott, was unable to clear it off the line.

The second half became about improvement for the military team and getting more control over the game in midfield. They created chances, but were unable to beat the Fire goalkeeper, who pulled off a number of solid saves.

The Air Force's sole goal was a typical Lucy Farrow finish – a fast-paced attack and a good low strike that left the goalkeeper with no chance.

While early in their season, this performance and result will give head coach Karl Craven and his team plenty to work on ahead of March's Inter Services matches.
