Victory for 1 Mercian who beat 6 Scots to win Army Super Cup football final
The 1st Battalion, The Mercian Regiment won the Army FA Super Cup Final after a 1-4 victory over the 6th Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland.
1 Mercian, who won this year's Major Units competition, entered the Army Super Cup Final for the first time to take on the home team, 6 Scots, who played in the delayed final in January 2023.
The first half began strongly for 1 Mercian, with Lewis Kennedy getting on the scoresheet first at the 11-minute mark.
Dominating ball possession, 1 Mercian snuck through with a second goal this time by Zak Smith tucking the ball into the net from a corner kick to give the visitors a further 2-0 lead.
With half-time approaching, 6 Scots were caught napping by 1 Mercian skipper Zak Northedge, who batted the ball into the net from outside the box to give 1 Mercian a 3-0 lead going into half-time.
In the second half, 6 Scots returned with a sense of urgency to bridge the gap between them and the visiting team.
The home team showed much better pace with ball possession, blocking 1 Mercian from extending their lead.
As the clock ticked down to full time, 6 Scots finally got onto the scoresheet with Daniel McInnes heading the ball in from a corner kick to bring the score to 1-3 but, with minutes until full time, McInnes' goal perhaps came too late for the home side.
With 1 Mercian assured of the Army Super Cup title, Sam Barber was right on target with seconds to spare, bringing their goal tally to 1-4.
At full time, 1 Mercian claimed the Army Super Cup title with a dominant 1-4 victory over 6 Scots, who put on a brave performance in the second half to deny the visitors a clean sheet.
