British Army score with last play of the game to win men's Inter Services on tries scored

A dramatic last-gasp try from Jon Davetanivalu saw the British Army men's rugby league team win the Inter Services for the first time since 2019.

A remarkable game in Heworth saw the Navy race into a hefty lead but a brilliant Army comeback saw them win 38-26.

They knew prior to the game that they would have to overturn a 12-point deficit in the table to the RAF and Davetanivalu's converted try in the final moments levelled the points difference and took the Army into top spot on tries scored.

It was a final standings that looked impossible 30 minutes into the game as the Navy raced into a three-try lead. Jack Bartlett, Rhys Bartlett and Kini Dakuliga all crossed the tryline and Ben Chambers converted each time as the Navy's much-improved system and performance from two weeks ago saw them go 22-0 up.

The Army's title hopes were all but over and the RAF will have been ready to celebrate, but Davetanivalu's first try was converted by Dylan Jackson and the men in red suddenly showed signs of life.

Aborosio Sovatabua and Freddy Work both added tries before half-time but Jackson failed to convert, missing out on four extra points, and it was 22-14 at the break.

The momentum was with the Army and Mitchi Vulikijapani drove over for two converted tries to make it 26-22 to the men in red in the second half.

They were now leading the game but they were still behind in the title race and when Junior Vasuitoga scored a try that Atunaisa Rasusosuo converted, the Army were within two points of the championship.

Cue some typical Inter Services rugby league drama. The Army conceded three back-to-back penalties and Petero Canakaivata was sent to the sin bin.

The pressure on the Army defence saw Adam Watts score an unconverted try for the Navy - the Army's points difference taking a hit again.

We were set for a grandstand finish as if the Army could score in the final minutes and the kick would be converted, they would be Inter Services champions.

Their skipper, Davetanivalu, was the man who led from the front and his try was met with roaring cheers from the Army bench.

The kick still needed to be converted though and Rasusosuo kept his cool to fire the ball through the posts with the final action of the game. The full-time whistle sparked an Army celebration for the ages and they were officially champions for the first time in seven years.
