Rugby Union: Army women score four tries to beat Brunel University
The Army women rugby union team have continued their preparations ahead of the Inter Services Championship with a fixture against Brunel University.
A solid second half display from the forces side saw them run in four tries in a 29-0 victory.
The early exchanges of the second half saw the Army camp themselves close to their opponent's line.
Heidi Silcox picked off a wayward Brunel lineout and after a brief juggle of the ball she crashed over for the first try of the game.
Kira Fitzpatrick continued her fine form from the kicking tee this season slotting over the conversion to put the Army 7-0 up.
Fitzpatrick, who helped the Army Women to the Inter Services rugby league title earlier in the autumn was given another opportunity to display her kicking skills when her side was awarded a penalty in front of the posts.
The winger made it two from two as she sent the ball between the uprights extending the lead to 10-0.
With points in the board the Service side started to play with more confidence and freedom. Skipper Jade Mullen and fullback Emily Griffiths combined beautifully and Harlequins back Mullen scooted home for a fab five points that went unconverted.
With their tails up, the Army scored a third try soon after. This time Jasmine Conn was able to weave her way through the traffic and dash in for a converted try.
There was still time for the Army to add further points. Mullen as chief orchestrator pulled the strings once more. Her delayed pass to Carrie Roberts helped send the former England rugby league star on her way to the try line.
A satisfactory scoreline against the Brunel students sets the Army up nicely for tougher tests in the New Year as they face England and Wales Women Under 20s, but first it is the Swedish National side at the end of January.
