Former Army Lance Corporal Corie Mapp has won the overall World Cup title in para bobsleigh in the final event of the season in La Plagne.

Mapp arrived in France at the top of the World Cup standings and looked on course to cement his claim on the title after a silver medal winning performance on Saturday.

The 45-year-old knew that a sixth-place finish in Sunday's heats would be enough to win the title for the second time, matching his previous World Cup title winning campaign in 2018.

He clocked a combined time of 02:13:07 in Sunday's race to take bronze behind joint first place finishers Christopher Stewart and Arturs Klots, which was enough to win the overall World Cup title on 1631 points.

On the World Cup circuit, Mapp made multiple podiums in Lillehammer, La Plagne, St Moritz and Sigulda and he never finished outside the top five across the entire season.

Reacting to his win, Mapp told the British Bobsleigh & Skeleton Association (BBSA) that winning his second-ever World Cup title is an "incredible feeling".

He said: “I hadn’t won it for six years so I was really keen to do that this season. It was massive on my to do list and it’s an incredible feeling to have that crystal globe in my hands again.

“I’m extremely pleased with the way the whole week in La Plagne went. To win silver and bronze when I knew that two good performances would mean I’d stay at the top of the standings was pretty special.

“It’s been a tough couple of years and I’m just incredibly grateful to have been able to represent the country in the way that I have.

“Huge thanks to all my sponsors and to the BBSA (British Bobsleigh & Skeleton Association). Huge thanks as well to all the other athletes and to people from all over the world who have taken the time to send me messages and to encourage me moving forward.”

The former Lance Corporal in The Life Guards, which is one the Household Cavalry regiments, Mapp lost both legs when his military vehicle ran over an explosive device in Afghanistan in 2010.

Mapp's World Cup win comes of the back of his European Championship win in Lillehammer and his World Championship bronze in St. Moritz.
