Power of a God: Sweden reveals new CV90 mortar variant
An armoured combat vehicle described as one of the best in Sweden’s infantry fleet is getting a new variant added to its ranks - named after the power of a God.
The Combat Vehicle 90, or CV90, has been developed to create the CV90 Mjolner variant, fitted with a 120mm self-propelled mortar system.
The Mjolner variant, named after the hammer of Thor from Norse mythology, integrates a new turret with two mortars on the original chassis design of the infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) for the Swedish Armed Forces.
Major General Karl Engelbrektson, Sweden's Chief of Army, said: "We are showing the CV90 family, and how it is a very important ingredient in the mechanised fight.
"Manoeuvrability is the key ingredient for winning on the battlefield, and it's the key ingredients to have safety for our troops."
The company claims the new Mjolner mounted mortar system, produced by BAE Systems Hagglunds, will increase indirect fire capabilities to support mechanised battalions.
Its name is perhaps apt for such firepower as Thor's hammer in the mytholoy is depicted as one of the most fearsome weapons in the world, capable of destroying entire mountains.
The CV90 is currently used by the armies of Switzerland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, and Finland.
Its design has been optimised to operate in woodland areas such as the forests of Scandinavia - much like the terrain of Eastern Ukraine.
The Swedish government announced in January 2023 that 50 CV90s would be donated to Ukraine to assist in its defence against the Russian invasion.
Sweden's Army has now placed an order for 20 more of the CV90 mortar systems from BAE Systems and aims to have 80 by 2025, joining about 500 other variants.
