Lord David Cameron has visited Ukraine for talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky in his new role as Foreign Secretary.

Mr Zelensky said the pair discussed the supply of weapons for his forces fighting against the Russian invasion when they met in Kyiv.

The Ukrainian leader said: "We had a good meeting focused on weapons for the frontline, strengthening air defence, and protecting our people and critical infrastructure.

"I am grateful to the UK for its support!"

Former prime minister Lord Cameron became Foreign Secretary on Monday and his visit to Ukraine will be intended to demonstrate the UK's continued support for the country.

His predecessor James Cleverly had been scheduled to make the visit before being moved to the Home Office in Monday's Cabinet reshuffle.

In August, three contracts were signed that would see over £90m of air defence drones provided to Ukraine.

This included a £56m counter-uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) contract with Norwegian defence company Kongsberg to purchase vehicle-mounted counter-drone systems to detect, track, destroy or disrupt UAS.

The Ministry of Defence also said in August that Russia was failing to have a "decisive operational effect" due to the threat posed by Ukraine's air defences.

It said the Russian air force had carried out over 100 sorties a day up to that point over the summer, but these had been limited to Russian-controlled territory due to the threat from Ukrainian air defences.
