Two people have died and a child injured after blasts were reported on the bridge linking Russia with the occupied Crimea peninsula in Ukraine.

Russian officials have said Ukraine was behind what they are calling a "terrorist" attack, which they say happened overnight and involved unmanned sea drones.

The road and rail bridge across the Kerch Strait is an important supply route for the Kremlin's forces and a key target for Ukraine.

Mykhailo Podolyak, an aide to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, appears to have referenced the incident on Twitter.

He tweeted: "Any illegal structures used to deliver Russian instruments of mass murder are necessarily short-lived –  regardless of the reasons for the destruction."

Last October, the bridge was temporarily closed after being badly damaged when it was hit with a truck bomb by Ukrainian special services.

President Putin has also announced that Russia will use controversial cluster bombs in Ukraine if Kyiv deploys the bombs they have been given by the US.

Mr Putin told Russian state media that the country has a "sufficient stockpile" and warned that it "reserves the right to take reciprocal action".

The Pentagon says the ground-launched cluster munitions will help Ukrainian forces fight their way through deep Russian defences while Nato nations ramp up ammunition production.
