Avdiivka: Why is the heavily defended Ukrainian town so important to Russia?

Watch: Ukraine is defending Avdiivka against an 8,000-strong Russian army.

Moscow has put an estimated 6,000-8,000 troops into the battle for Avdiivka in what is one of the biggest battles of the Ukraine war so far.

UK intelligence described the assault on the town in the Donetsk region as Russia's "most significant offensive operation" in Ukraine since at least January - but why is the town so important to Moscow?

It is thought by attacking Avdiivka, Russia is hoping to divert Ukrainian troops away from other battles further south, as the video above explains.
