Nato allies and the Ukrainian President have congratulated Donald Trump following his victory in the US presidential election.

Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte said the result would "again be key to keeping our alliance strong".

"Through Nato, the US has 31 friends and allies who help to advance US interests, multiply American power and keep Americans safe," he said.

"When President-elect Trump takes office again on January 20, he will be welcomed by a stronger, larger, and more united Alliance," added Mr Rutte.

"Together, Nato allies represent half of the world's economic might and half of the world's military might.

"We face a growing number of challenges globally, from a more aggressive Russia to terrorism, to strategic competition with China, as well the increasing alignment of China, Russia, North Korea and Iran.

"Working together through Nato helps to deter aggression, protect our collective security and support our economies."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said: "Congratulations to Donald Trump on his impressive election victory.

"I recall our great meeting with President Trump back in September when we discussed in detail the Ukraine-US strategic partnership, the Victory Plan, and ways to put an end to Russian aggression against Ukraine.

"I appreciate President Trump's commitment to the 'peace through strength' approach in global affairs.

"This is exactly the principle that can practically bring just peace in Ukraine closer. I am hopeful that we will put it into action together.

"We look forward to an era of a strong United States of America under President Trump's decisive leadership.

"We rely on continued strong bipartisan support for Ukraine in the United States."

Commenting on the special relationship Britain has with the United States, Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the election result "historic".

He also stated his intention to build a deeper bond with Mr Trump for the benefit of both countries.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy echoed the PM’s congratulations, despite having been a vocal critic of the US leader in the past.

Former defence secretary Sir Ben Wallace predicted a second Trump presidency would push European Nato members to commit more to security, with a pledge to spend 3% of GDP.

"Whatever your feelings about the US election are, the best insurance for all our security is to invest in our own defence and security right across Europe," Mr Wallace said.
