The first MP to announce they are running to be the next Prime Minister has revealed he always wears British Army-issue socks!

During a question and answer session online posted on his Twitter account, Conservative MP Tom Tugendhat was asked if there was "something people might not know" about him.

The former Army Intelligence Corps officer revealed he got issued so many socks in the Army that, even though he left in 2013, he "still only wears Army socks".

Mr Tugendhat said that he was, in fact, wearing the olive green military socks – and lifted his leg to show them off.

He was also asked 'What's harder – being an MP or a soldier?', to which the reserve officer replied: "Well, at least you know where your enemy is when you're in the Army."

Who else is running?

Six MPs are left standing in the race to replace the PM in Number 10 now the voting process has begun.

The other candidates who are still in running for the role of Conservative Party leader are former Chancellor Rishi Sunak, former Defence Minister Penny Mordaunt, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, Attorney General Suella Braverman, and ex-minister Kemi Badenoch.
