Watch: Ukrainian navy arming vessels with Soviet 'Dalek Gun'.

Any fans of Doctor Who would recognise the distinctive shape of a Dalek – the cyborg aliens from the BBC science fiction programme.

And it is the shape of the Soviet-era AK306 rotary cannon that has earned it the 'Dalek Gun' nickname – with the Ukrainian military now looking at adapting the Russian weapon to be fitted to a medium-sized reconnaissance ship.

This involves creating an island on the front of the deck to allow the weapon system to be mounted.

The weapon system, made up of six 30mm rotary automatic cannons, can fire 600 to 1,000 rounds per minute with a range of 5,000 metres, meaning it can defeat both surface and air targets.

The Ukrainians have successfully tested the AK306, but it remains unclear how it will be used by Ukrainian forces.
